Unlimited sun and sea combined with a relaxed vibe and great food, that's beach restaurant Les Voiles. Every year from May to September, you can spend the day at this 'paillote de plage' at Portiragnes' West Beach (Plage Ouest). This is what a good old paillote is all about: rent a sunbed, order some bites, take a dip in the sea, and life is good. Plus, on Fridays and Saturdays, you can stay to chill or dance the night away, often accompanied by some live tunes.
Flip-Flops Off
I had dragged the family out for a Sunday lunch at Les Voiles and the minute we arrived, we were on holiday. And we were only 30 minutes from home. A cheerful waitress welcomed us and apologised straight away as there were only tables left in the sand. We didn't mind at all because it only added to the holiday atmosphere. So, flip-flops off and feet in the sand, and we were ready to order. Well, almost, as the menu is presented on blackboards next to the kitchen above the catch of the day. Each of us took turns to go and check it out. It was the perfect opportunity to discover the quirky interior with colourful vintage finds.
All Day Service
The great thing about Les Voiles is that the kitchen is open from 10h00 to 21h00 from Sundays to Thursdays. At the weekend, on Fridays and Saturdays, they stay open a bit longer: until 23h00 for food and 01h00 for fun. This means that you can come at any time you want within this time frame to order something to eat, which is rare in this part of France. I'm sure many of you recognise the frustration of being in front of a closed kitchen at five minutes past 2pm… Not at Les Voiles though, where they welcome you with a smile all day long. The staff advises taking time for dinner; therefore, you can make a reservation up to 2.5 hours before closing time.
Grignotages
Foodwise, you are in good hands, too. The family and I started with some 'grignotages' (nibbles), such as fried chipirones (baby squid, 12 euros) and 'la planche du fishologue', a selection of dried fish (20 euros). The brood obviously went for a hamburger and crispy chicken (both 20 euros), whereas Chéri and I shared a fish. We chose a beautiful Saint Pierre from the Mediterranean (8 euros per 100 grams; ours was 600 grams, enough for both of us). As I wanted to write a blog post about Les Voiles, we also had to test the dessert. The kids all had a delicious raspberry cake, and Chéri and I shared (well…) an apricot/pistachio cake. It was all excellent and we had a delightful afternoon at the beach. And found a new beach hotspot!
